Breathing Heart Meditation

If you are able to do so, find a place to sit or lay down.

Step 1, choose an intention or feeling or energy that you want to experience.

What would answer the question “how do you want to BE at this time?” (e.g. happy, content, grateful, joyful, peaceful, relaxed etc)

Think of a lived experience or memory that manifests that particular feeling for you.

If you wish to manifest peace… think of a simple memory that represents “peace” for you.

If your intention is joy… think of a simple memory that represents “joy”.

For any energy you want (healing, love, contentment, focus, clarity, serenity, etc) think of an experience that respresents that feeling.

Be with that for just a moment.  And mentally set it aside for now.

Step 2, imagine that you are breathing directly into your heart.

Imagine that with each inhale… your heart expands, like your lungs.

And with each exhale… your heart contracts or relaxes, like your lungs.

As you breathe, feel your heart expand with each breath in, and gently relax with each breath out.

Go through a few cycles of this to get comfortable with it. This is only happening in your imagination, not in reality.

Step 3, Once you're comfortable with this visual image, come back to the feeling you were focusing on.

On your next inhalation…  imagine drawing that feeling directly into your heart.

As your heart expands w/this feeling, become aware of the energy/emotion flowing from your heart, through your body, your limbs, your head.

Then exhale (feeling the energetic flow through your body),

and on your next breath in…imagine inhaling MORE of this feeling from that experience directly into your heart.

Do this for as long as you like.

With practice, you can learn to engage this meditation on the first breath into the technique.

With more practice, the calming effects will last longer and longer.

Since you can’t always change a stressful environment… at least you can shift where YOU are in the environment and lessen the impact from stress in your body.

Nothing is so strong as gentleness, and nothing so gentle as real strength ~ Saint Francis de Sales
